Oberek
Based in Swindon, Established 1993
The Polish community in Swindon has been growing and thriving since the early 50’s. One of the priorities in the early days was to sustain and promote Polish culture, language and traditions. Dancing in traditional costumes was a significant way of bringing that culture alive and many adults today were members of children’s dance groups.
The First British Festival of Polish Folklore in 1993 was the inspiration for founding the adult group, Oberek. A surge of enthusiasm resulted within a year in the first programme of dances from Lublin, complete with costumes. We have since added Kaszuby, Wielkopolska, Cieszyn and Krakόw to our repertoire and have taken part in every Festival since 1995.
Over the years, Oberek has danced regularly at Polish Community events in Swindon and has enjoyed popularity at charity and fund-raising events, local concerts, fetes, parties, weddings, multicultural events and also military events.
Some of the founder members are still with us and we are always delighted to welcome new dancing enthusiasts.
